The first thing that always comes up is how to pronounce the name. The name is a Scottish Gaelic word meaning "Land of Heather" and pronounced {fair-oh-key}. I descend from a Norman family who migrated to Scotland in the 16th century. Seating the family in the town of Ferrochie (modern day Freuchie) our family became known as Paton of Ferrochie. I know, I know. I broke a major rule of marketing when picking a name no one can pronounce. I even had someone in business say, "Oh, I see. So you don't want to sell anything?" I don't care. What Ferrochie stands for is much bigger than a name. It's a concept of a different way to live and to do business with people.
The Ferrochie story begins with the desire to make products in the craftsman tradition. Hands on creations that are quality built and uniquely individual. The craftsman in mainstream design has been largely overshadowed by mass production. That's not to say mass production doesn't have it's place. I believe it serves a vital role in a balanced and stable economy. But, with Ferrochie I hope to recapture a small part of what was once a great tradition in our country and around the world.
Ferrochie was founded in October of 2009. The catalog is small but continues to grow every year. Every design on the site is hand made individually and unique because of it. It is largely an experiment based on the hypothesis that relationships between people still matter. We hope to be proven right. |
